The Acai Berry and Its Long History of Natural Health Benefits
In the floodplain of the northern Brazilian Rain forest, 50 to 75 ft. Palms Trees related to the Saw Palmetto grow naturally near the banks of the Amazon River.
At the tops of these very special palms grow clusters of dark purple berries named Acai, which the indigenous people still harvest as a natural source of food and medicine, as they have for centuries.
The unobtrusive palms blend well with the jungle, where they’ve existed for as long as anyone living in the territory can remember. Unfortunately until recently the trees were cut down by the millions for the Heart of Palm in the center of the tree. The Acai berry was known only to the native peoples. Due to the poor economic situation of the people along the river cutting the trees down made more sense that saving them.
However in the last 10 years or so this berry has come to the attention of the worlds top botanical scientists. This berry has quietly slipped out of the rain forest and into the marketplace.
Now that the Acai berry and its long history of health benefits been rediscovered by the outside world. The trees are now being protected as never before. This of course is a great win for the environment of the rain forest and the world. It also is bringing in a great financial boom to the people who live along the river. The berry is still picked by hand and cash only transactions are made between the locals and processing plants down stream. This is making a huge difference for not only the locals but the world in general.
