The Very Powerful Yet Misunderstood Acai Berry

Have you heard all the great stuff about the Acai Berry. This very powerful yet very misunderstood berry has become an American obsession. But buyer beware. Just because a label says Acai doesn’t mean it has Acai. Lets look at the truth.

I was in a seminar last night listening on one of the foremost authorities on the Acai Berry. Pronounced (a’ sigh ee) this dark purple berry has come storming on to the nutritional scene that the Calvary coming in over the hill.

Ever since Dr. Perricone showed up on the Oprah Winfrey show in late 2004 several companies have been trying to “jump on the Acai bandwagon.” In the Perricone Promise Dr. Perricone touts the benefits of the Acai berry for the world. The truth about the berry is more complex that most people think. Just because science has proved the Acai berry to be one of the most healthy foods on earth. Doesn’t mean that what you are buying is truly that good for you. In fact is most Acai that you buy is no better for you than if you that eating store bought fruit and veggies . This is as low as 60 on the ORAC scale  This is truly a tragedy. When the  berry when processed correctly. It  has a 1027 ORAC rating.

The ORAC scale is what measures the anti oxidant content of food. So how do you know the difference. First the berry starts to spoil after the first 24 hours after picking so it must be processed immediately after picking. This is where our discrepancy begins. There are two ways to process Acai. The first and most common is spray drying. This process requires cooking out and bleaching out the berry. This give its reconstituted juice a grape juice like look and smoothness. However their is little to no nutritional value in this.

The other process is to make Opti-Acai which is a freeze dried pulp. This flash process holds in nutrients and makes a very pulpy juice. When you have this type of juice it usually sold in a colored bottle in opposed to a clear bottle. The reason for this is the Acai has the protein profile of an egg. These proteins float around in the juice along with the amino acids and would not look very palatable on the store shelf in a clear bottle. This purple pulpy juice with green oily specs floating around in it. Is indeed one of the most healthy juices on earth.  It may not look pretty but mixed with other fruits that compliment the bitter flavor. A person could easily get 13 servings of fruit a day just from 4 ounces of this juice.

The consumer does need to beware. There are so many Acai beverages on the market and some even have labels that say Acai and yet have no Acai in them.  This being said. Finding products with real Acai in them can make a huge difference in your health.
