Personal Marketing–Keeping up Appearences.
As I was walking down my street the other day. I began really looking at the homes in my area. I found it interesting how keeping up appearances matters so much in life.
I was pondering this in my mind when one of my favorite British Comedy’s came to mind. Keeping up Appearances is the story of Hyacinth Bucket “pronounced Bouquet,” a 30 year house wife and social climber. Hyacinth has this completely misgiving idea that she is the center of the worlds social life and works hard at irritating everyone around her. She is unaware of this and simply believes that one day she will be allowed because of her great work and arrogance. To spend time entertaining the social elites of the area.
Hyacinth however, is living under the misguided notion that people like her. No one can stand her and everyone around her wonders how her husband Richard could stand her for over 30 years.
She is the perfect example of over doing it when it comes to Keeping up Appearances. Now her brother in law is the other extreme.
Onslow is your atypical slob. Always half drunk but the life of the party and an all round good guy. He cares not what he looks like or what others are thinking about him. His home is a mess and it is easy to pass judgment on him as you pass by.
As we passed each home I realized that my mind was making snap judgments about the people who lived in these homes. On home had a really nice yard. It was clean and it looked brand new. The house next to it had old cars on the lawn and weeds growing everywhere.
Now I know both of these neighbors well. In knowing them I can tell you that the outward appearance of these homes are not a sign of those who live in the homes.
The nicer looking home belongs to an individual whom I would not be caught dead in a dark ally with. He has been nothing but trouble for several of the neighbors and the police are there all of the time.
The other home belongs to a hard working auto mechanic. Who fixes little old ladies cars in his front yard on the side. He never takes the time to mow the lawn because his family, church, and business takes all of his time.
Looking at these examples. You would say don’t judge a book by its cover. However in personal marketing appearances do matter. If you don’t look good, smell good, dress good. You won’t get what you are really after in life. Presentation is everything. Especially on the first meeting. Masters of Personal Marketing are masters at presenting themselves.
Whether or not you are on the red carpet or just hanging out with the gang. If you are going to succeed in personal marketing. You must be keeping up appearances.
